Organizing Canvas Toy Bins with Labels

I am so, so excited to start 2015 with an organizational post, AND the Silhouette Challenge!  Last year, the Silhouette Challenges were so fun and inspirational!  This year, we are doing something different~each month has a bonus challenge.  For January, we started with the very popular topic of ORGANIZATION, and the bonus challenge to use VINYL!  I jumped at the chance to add some fun labels to my daughter’s toy bins for this month’s challenge.  Organize?  YES!  Use vinyl? YES, YES!

I am a sucker for the canvas cube bins.  I think they are one of the most functional organization tools out there.  But how do you know what is in them?  Some have a clear, small insert to slip a piece of paper in, so you know the contents.  But for me, that’s not fun and cute enough!  I had these 4×6 acrylic frames in my craft room.  I use them for my Family Tile.    I had bought a huge box of them, and figured I could spare 5 or so to make these bins more functional!  But first, a little “before” photo:

This is a great project for beginners.  You seriously just add text to your Silhouette Software, and cut it.  Easy peasy! But here are the details:

1.  Draw a rectangle in your Cameo software and size it to approximately 4×6 inches.  Cut a piece of white cardstock to the size of 4×6.  I used the settings recommend in the cut window on my Cameo for this, and it turned out great.

2.  Set up the text in your software. I used the font Miss Smarty Pants {seems acceptable for the princess these days}.  It is a relatively thin font, so I stretched it a bit to widen it.  I made sure to place it inside the rectangle, to be sure it was the right size.  Then I moved the rectangle off the cut screen~I didn’t want to cut it again!

3.  Lay your vinyl on the mat, color side up, and cut it.  Weed off the excess, and add your transfer paper.

4.  Adhere the vinyl words to the cut cardstock rectangles.  Now, don’t burnish the transfer tape too long on the cardstock, or it’ll start to tear when you pull the transfer tape away.  Trust me, I learned that.  However, I’m also glad I used white cardstock.  There were a couple places the cardstock started to peel off a bit when I was pulling off the transfer tape.  You can’t even tell, but had it been patterned paper,  you’d be able to tell.

5.  Insert the cardstock rectangle into clear acrylic frame.  Add a little tape bubble or double sided tape between the cardstock and frame on the back side to keep it in place.

6.  Hot glue the frame to the outside of the bin, and fill with your favorite toys!

  1. Oh this is a great idea! I have a similar system for my son’s toys but they all just get tossed in the bins because I don’t have the labeled! I love this!

    • Thank you, Randi! I’m just a sucker for labels in general! I had tried heat transfer vinyl, on the bins, but it didn’t work~it melted them. So this was the next idea I had!

  2. Cute Cute Cute! I have labels for our kid’s toy bins and it helps me, as much as them, to get the toys back in the right spot.
